Silver at Winterthur

Wilmington, Delaware

October 1, 2006
The silver was just spectacular.

Repousse tea and coffee service made by Samuel Kirk, ca. 1828.

Alas, there were no free samples.

American fiddle, thread and shell silver made by Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner, 1830-40.

I just love the dog-headed snake handle and dolphin top on this ewer.

This stunning covered cup has a lid that can be inverted to be a footed bowl.
It was most likely designed to hold posset, a concoction of milk, eggs, and wine or ale, similar to eggnog.

It was made by Jurian Blanck, Jr., in New York, about 1690.

What a neat handle on this sauce boat.  And wouldn't you love to have the covered bowl?

But not everything was silver.

This is described as a False Hair Cap.
It is made of silk, ca. 1830-40.
These were designed to be worn under a small cap.

And did you ever wonder why you see so many candle snuffers in antique shops?
(This one is steel, made in England, 1800-1830)
Before 1830, candles burned with loosely twisted cotton wicks that were not consumed as the candle burned down.
Candles had to be trimmed every few minutes by clipping off unburned sooty wick with a snuffer.

BTW, Winterthur is pronounced WIN-TER-TOOR.

We will have to return to take some of the gallery tours.  We took many pictures, and we would be happy to share them.  Let me know if you want to see more!
