Broome County has six carousels in local parks.
All rides are free because George F. Johnson (of Endicott Johnson)
did not have a nickel to ride one when he was a child. He built local
parks and put free carousels in them so that every child would be able
to ride. They remain free to this day. And they are open to
children and adults (but if you weigh more than 290, they ask that you
ride the chariot rather than the horse).

These were smaller horses than on the one in Binghamton.

The carousels are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Two of today's carousels have a pig and a dog.
The other's were all horses.
I think all were "jumpers".

There are two more to ride - one in Johnson City and one in Binghamton
at the Ross Park Zoo.
If you ride all six between Memorial Day and Labor Day, collect the
coupons you get after the ride and turn them in to get a free button with
a jewel at the Ross Park Zoo.
