Welcome to our winter bird feeder.

Winter 2002 and 2003
Chicadee with Seed Jan26,2003
Winter lasts a long time.  No flowers to photograph....
so we put bird feeders outside the kitchen window.
One is filled with sunflower seeds.
One had niger seeds in 2002, which finches are supposed to like.
We have found, however, that no one likes niger seeds and everyone likes sunflower seeds.
We have altered the finch feeder to accomodate the larger sunflower seeds.

The first to arrive were the goldfinches,

quickly followed by the chickadees.

We haven't seen goldfinches recently, but have had redpoles and pine siskins (no photo).
Nuthatches were next.

Doesn't the house finch bill look like a Darwin study?

In 2003 we also got a pair of titmice (no pic yet)  and several tree sparrows.

David made a suet cage.  Two different woodpeckers really like it.

Funny as can be are the starlings or bluejays trying to get suet.  (no photo)
The nuthatches and chickadees also like the suet.
We did not do anything fancy for the suet cage - just bought a lump from the butcher, sliced it,  and put it in the metal frame.

We had the cutest chipmunk, but he carried away huge amounts of seeds and kept the birds off the feeder.  D put a pie plate over the feeder, and that kept him away.  Haven't seen him recently. Perhaps he is hibernating - or the cat got him.
Notice the size of his cheeks in the second picture!

We started throwing sunflower seeds on the ground for the ground feeders,
so we have lots of doves, bluejays, a few cardinals, juncos, and grosbeaks.
Redwing blackbirds have just arrived.

In May, 2003, we were delighted to see two new birds,
the rufous sided towhee (no pic)
and the male rose-breasted grosbeak.
We had to take this picture through the window, so it isn't very clear.

Other neighboring birds

David was able to photograph a pileated woodpecker at the Oxford House.
He was carving out a grapefruit-sized hole in the maple tree.

This bird is about 18 inches long!!!!

Just before winter, we found this flock of birds on Chenango Lake Road.
They haven't been seen recently, so I assume they migrated.
