Gray Fox - Urocyon cinereoargenteus

A gray fox appeared in our backyard on May 25, 2006.

NAMES: English: grey fox. Spanish: Zorro gris
Classification

 Phylum: Chordata
 Class: Mammalia
 Order: Carnivora
 Family: Canidae
 Genus: Urocyon
We had seen them playing around the fallen-down barn, but this one came right up to the house near the bird feeders.  We live out in the country on an old farm, surrounded, except for the road frontage,  by old farms and woodland, so the fox has plenty of room to roam.

This was a pretty impressive creature.  He stayed around for quite a while to be photographed.
We were concerned about seeing a fox during the daytime, even though this guy looked quite healthy, with a beautiful coat and bright eyes.  Turns out that they can be seen anytime.
They are omniverous, eating small mammals, birds, bugs, fruit, and maybe even this critter who appeared in the front yard.

Well, he came back a week later - this time to the front yard.
We have been going through a lot of cat food.  Do you suppose this is the reason?

This critter certainly seems secure!
Now, if it would only deal with the woodchucks who have eaten all the peas and broccoli.

Do you know how to tell if you have a gray fox and not a red fox?
A red fox has a white tail-tip.
A gray fox has a black tail-tip.
Now you know.
